APPROACH

FROM THOSE WHO REMAIN: “RUINS” IS OUR EXTENDED CAMPAIGN FOR CASA, AIMING TO PROMOTE AWARENESS FOR PORTUGAL'S CURRENT HOUSING CRISIS. AN ARCHITECTURAL-BASED CONCEPT, ADVERSA DEPICTS THE MENTAL STATE OF OUR CHARACTERS THROUGH THE SPACE THEY RESIDE IN.

Fleshed out from the experiences of a selected group of eight participating volunteers, the project was directed with an investigative vision to depict a dystopian architectural menace. “We are conditioned by where we’re born and where we live, (and) that shapes the way we live,” says H.S. (58). We were therefore interested in ruins as a representation of the brutalized inner selves of marginalized communities — “The Runners.” The axis of these runners, their materialized thought-land (The Farm), and the oppressed behavior derived from this condition through the State militiamen form the paranoid landscape we wanted to convey from the documental testimonies of the volunteers.

"Nobody cared (about me). No local State officers tried to correct my situation. Still, CASA gave me a safe haven where I could work on myself and understand that I could make more of life,” described A.P. (43). This psychological approach plays a role in empathizing with the struggles of these individuals.
