OEI & Magnum Photos, distinguish the work of Magna Araújo Amorim
The work of Portuguese visual artist Magna Araújo Amorim has received a Special Mention through Aprender Transforma, an initiative developed by the Organisation of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture, OEI, in partnership with Magnum Photos.
Her awarded work, Construir Pontes, Edificar Ideias, shares its title with the motto of BIOGRAF's second edition and turns its attention towards the festival's Education Programme. Developed around an activity promoted with artist Henrique do Vale, the work documents a dimension of BIOGRAF that takes place away from the conventional image of the film festival: sustained contact between artistic practice, learning and the communities with which the programme works.
Aprender Transforma is a joint OEI–Magnum Photos initiative using documentary photography to examine the human impact of cooperation across Ibero-America. Five Magnum photographers documented OEI projects in Argentina, Brazil, Honduras, Mexico and the Spain–Portugal border, while a wider open photography initiative invited other perspectives into the project.
The partnership brings together two institutions with distinct but complementary histories. Founded in 1949, the OEI is the largest multilateral cooperation organisation among Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking Ibero-American countries, working with 23 member states across education, science and culture. In 2024 it received the Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation.
Magnum Photos, founded in 1947 by Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and David Seymour, has become one of the world's most influential photographic cooperatives, with more than seventy-five years of work documenting major events, people and places through the distinct authorship of its photographers. Also in 2024, Magnum received the Princess of Asturias Award for Concord.
