Photographing a City in Transition
In October 2024, Portuguese visual artist and photographer Magna Araújo Amorim was voted recipient of the European Commission's Megalizzi-Niedzielski Prize in Photography.
The distinction followed her participation in Youth4Regions, the European Commission programme that brings emerging journalists from across Europe to Brussels for training, mentorship and contact with European institutions and news organisations.
The Commission selected Magna alongside Neža Borkovič of Slovenia and Sigrid Hallqvist of Sweden, recognising their journalistic work and commitment to European journalism.
At the centre of Magna's recognition was a photographic series documenting the construction of Porto Metro's new Pink Line. The work follows the relationship forming between the new transport infrastructure and the city around it. Construction sites, temporary structures and interventions in public space become evidence of Porto at a moment of change. The series had previously received recognition through Youth4Regions in the Photojournalism category.
Within Magna's participation in ADVERSA, the project sits between documentary and conceptual photography. The photographs record the construction process while also paying close attention to the temporary visual order created by it.
The Megalizzi-Niedzielski Prize was created in memory of Antonio Megalizzi and Bartek Piotr Orent-Niedzielski, two young European journalists who died following the 2018 terrorist attack in Strasbourg. Connected to Youth4Regions, the award recognises emerging journalists and their contribution to European journalism.
For Magna, the recognition gave a local subject a wider European context. One transport line under construction in Porto became a way of observing how a city changes while that change is still taking place.
