Between August 7 to 9, BIOGRAF presented Territórios Sem Fronteira, the Film Programme of the XXIV Cerveira International Art Biennial, developed in partnership with the Biennial and curated by Mafalda Santos in dialogue with the direction of BIOGRAF.
Rather than treating cinema as a parallel activity to the Biennial, the programme positioned the moving image within its wider field of contemporary artistic practice. Documentary, film essay, video and experimental forms were brought together through works by artists and filmmakers including Silvestre Pestana, André Sousa and Mauro Cerqueira, António Ole, Filipa César, Luciana Fina, Ana Pérez-Quiroga, Edileuza Penha de Souza, Tânia Dinis, and Vincent Arthur Goudreau.
The programme was structured around the Biennial’s Silvestre Pestana Homage, Invited Artists and International Competition, and extended beyond screenings through conversations with artists and filmmakers, as well as performative and musical encounters.
This collaboration also reinforced a relationship that is fundamental to BIOGRAF's identity. Vila Nova de Cerveira has a long history of artistic experimentation through its Biennial; BIOGRAF approaches cinema from a similarly expanded perspective, considering film not only as an industry or exhibition format, but as a space in which visual art, architecture, sound and politics can intersect.
In this sense, Territórios Sem Fronteira became both a film programme within the XXIV BIAC and a statement about the territory shared by the two organisations: one in which the boundaries between cinema and contemporary art are deliberately allowed to remain open.
